Crayoté

Among the small but growing constellation of indigenous black metal projects working out of Brazil, Crayoté stands apart for the explicitness of its politics and the rawness of its sound. The band describes itself as a multiethnic collective of indigenous members navigating urban contexts, channeling ancestral memory and present-day protest through corroded, lo-fi black metal. Active since 2017, the project remained underground until June 2023, when its first demo, Devourer of False Prophets, arrived through the band's own Bandcamp page. The four-track release is openly experimental, sketching out several directions the group might pursue: each song leans on different vocal phrasings, different riff cells, different production textures, as if testing what indigenous black metal might sound like at all. Vocals are split between LaChoke and Bidzamu, with guitars by Tchompek Ambruk and Wallisuya Necromantick, bass by Kalina Ann, and session drums from Soturna Crust of Azul Turquesa. Track titles like Tenzwehutzumek and Destino Celestial fold indigenous language and cosmology directly into the song architecture, while lyrical themes circle indigenism, indigenous pride, war, indigenous politics and ancestral mysticism. The sonic vocabulary will be familiar to anyone who has spent time with Kaatayra or the broader South American raw black metal underground, but Crayoté pushes harder on the protest dimension: the false prophets of the title are colonial Christianity and the institutions that built themselves on it. The band remains unsigned and self-released, distributing through Bandcamp and YouTube and surfacing in fanzines like Sepulchral Voice that track the further reaches of the global black metal underground. As a statement of intent, the demo is less a finished record than a manifesto pinned to four songs, marking out territory that very few Brazilian metal bands have chosen to occupy.
