Porto Alegre's metal underground has long been overshadowed by the Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte axes, but the gaucho scene has quietly nurtured technically-minded bands willing to splice thrash aggression with progressive ambition. Charlar slots squarely into that lineage. Formed in March 2012 as a four-piece built around vocalist Mauricio Marques, guitarist Paulo Lirio, bassist Cristiano Kappaun, and drummer Eduardo Chaves, the band took its name from a word meaning to chat or to embark on an adventure - a fitting double meaning for a project that treated each song as a deliberate departure from conventional thrash structure. Their debut EP Creation of the Mind arrived in May 2014, a five-track document running through Shitbag, A New Time, the title track, Useless Believe, and the unceremoniously titled Fuck Off All Fools. The record captures the band straddling two impulses: the contagious, almost animalistic violence of Bay Area thrash, and the time-signature curiosity of progressive metal, with passages that wander into knottier territory before snapping back to a bruising riff. Charlar earned regional recognition in September 2014 when they opened for Sabaton at the band's Porto Alegre stop, a slot decided by a public vote that the band shared with fellow gauchos Platinus after both surpassed a thousand votes apiece - notable in a city where the underground thrash and groove community had to scrap hard for visible billing. Critics covering that show singled out Charlar's stage presence and the breadth of their compositions, noting that their thrash carried a progressive undertow rare in opening slots. The band has been on hiatus since 2014, leaving Creation of the Mind as their lone studio testament. For listeners tracing the Rio Grande do Sul metal lineage that runs through Nuctemeron, Dorsal Atlantica adjacents, and Distraught, Charlar remains a brief but distinctive footnote - a band that arrived technically sharp, made its mark, and stepped back before a follow-up could materialize.
